The withdrawal of troops and the seizure of power in Afghanistan by the Taliban (a terrorist organization banned in Russia ) brought the country to the brink of economic and social collapse. Former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown spoke about the risks of refusing aid to Afghanistan, reports the Daily Mail.

The politician predicted in Afghanistan “the biggest humanitarian crisis of our time” affecting the West. According to the ex-prime minister, more than half of the Afghan population suffers from extreme hunger, including a million children. He called on the world community to provide financial assistance to Afghans facing the choice of starvation or emigration as soon as possible.

“Ironically, when the entire international community is committed to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals – to free the entire world from absolute poverty in this decade – almost every Afghan citizen will be doomed to this dire fate,” Brown said.

The politician drew attention to the fact that “staying on the sidelines” Western countries create conditions for the exploitation of anti-Western sentiments. “The war in Afghanistan cost America trillions. It is within our power to find $ 4 billion to prevent hunger in this difficult world. This predicted tragedy cannot be insurmountable, ”concluded Brown.

Earlier, Pyotr Ilyichev, director of the Department of International Organizations of the Russian Foreign Ministry, predicted a global catastrophe due to the crisis in Afghanistan, if Western countries do not unfreeze Afghan accounts. He criticized a number of countries, including the United States, for refusing to help the Afghans due to the fact that the Taliban seized power in the country would take possession of the unblocked accounts.
