Rob Magowan's statement came during his speech at the British House of Commons Defence Committee.
Britain's Deputy Chief of Defence Staff Lieutenant General Rob Magowan said the British army is ready to engage Russian troops “today” if the Kremlin decides to give the order and break into the territory of one of the NATO countries on the eastern flank of the alliance.
Politico writes about this.
Magowan's statement was made during his speech to the British House of Commons Defense Committee on Thursday, November 21.
“If the British Army were asked to fight tonight, it would fight tonight. I don't think anyone in this room should have any illusions that if the Russians invaded Eastern Europe tonight, we would meet them in battle,” the general assured.
The publication notes that, despite Magowan's tough statements, the UK's military potential in the event of escalation of the conflict in Europe raises doubts. Last month, British Defense Secretary John Healey spoke about the problems in the army and the need to modernize weapons, noting that the state of the armed forces is “much worse than we thought.”
At the same time, in response to questions from MPs, Magovan said that the British army has “a number of operational risks and operational advantages.” The general added that he had previously spoken about the need to increase the combat potential of the Royal Armed Forces.
Recall that the front line “is now less stable than ever” since the first days of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. At a meeting of the Defence Select Committee, John Healey painted a grim picture of the situation in Ukraine.
