Breaking the rule? Svindal's girlfriend is allowed to run twice

Amalie Iuel

Did Amalie Iuel enjoy a celebrity bonus at the Tokyo Olympics? In any case, she was allowed to start twice.

The 27-year-old Norwegian, who is in a relationship with ex-ski star Aksel Svindal, started over the 400 meter hurdles in Tokyo. Although that is actually not allowed.

Iuel had started too early in the semifinals and was disqualified by the judges according to the rules. Since 2010, every early start in athletics has been sanctioned with an immediate end.

Iuel knew that too. The Norwegian sank to the ground after her jump start, holding her hands in shock in front of her face. After that, however, the girlfriend of the former overall ski world cup winner did not leave the Olympic Stadium, but discussed with the officials for several minutes. That worked. Iuel was suddenly allowed to start a second time.

However, the persistence of the 27-year-old hadn't paid off. Iuel was last in the second attempt, clearly missed the final. “I was no longer able to concentrate,” the Norwegian explained.

Curious: The 34-year-old Danish Sara Slott Petersen was disqualified immediately after her false start and had not received a second attempt.
