Brazilian President Unable to Attend Putin Summit Due to Accident

The Brazilian leader received blunt force trauma to the back of the head and is under control.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will not attend the BRICS summit, which will be held in Kazan on October 22-24. As part of the summit, he was supposed to have a bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The Brazilian president's press service explained that he cannot fly long distances “for medical reasons.”

As The Moscow Times reports, the day before, on October 19, Lula da Silva was hospitalized due to a domestic accident, as a result of which he received blunt trauma to the back of the head. After the examination, doctors advised him to avoid long-haul flights and remain under medical supervision.

In this regard, the Brazilian president will take part in the summit via video link.

Earlier, the Kremlin reported an agreement reached on a bilateral meeting between the Russian and Brazilian presidents during the BRICS summit.

Lula da Silva was supposed to contact Putin for the first time since his election to a third term in January 2023.

What is known about the summit in Kazan

Summit BRICS in Kazan will be the 16th in a row and will be held for the first time in an expanded format. Four more countries have joined the five main BRICS countries (Russia, China, Brazil, India, South Africa) – Egypt, Iran, the UAE and Ethiopia.

The invitation to the summit was sent to 38 countries. As of October 15, 33 countries have confirmed their participation. 24 of them will be represented at the level of top officials. In particular, the summit will be attended by the head of China Xi Jinping, the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi and the President of South Africa Cyril Ramaphosa.

The Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia Mohammed bin Salman did not accept the invitation; instead, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud will attend the summit.

The President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic has not yet given a final answer about his presence, having promised to decide no later than October 21.

Recall that on Sunday, October 20, the President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic called the Russian President Vladimir Putin for the first time since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation in Ukraine. He called the conversation “good, open, long and meaningful.”
