Brazilian President criticized for G20 summit communique: what does Ukraine have to do with it

It is known that the Brazilian president decided to release the final statement a day earlier in order to stop discussions about the war in Ukraine.

At the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, delegates from Europe expressed dissatisfaction with the decision of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to release the final statement a day earlier, to stop discussions about the war in Ukraine.

This was reported by Reuters.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed his disappointment that the G20 summit communique did not clearly indicate Russia's responsibility for starting the war against Ukraine.

“It is not enough when the G20 cannot find the words to make it clear that Russia is responsible,” Scholz said.

Usually the communique is published at the end of the event, but this time Brazilian President Lula da Silva decided to approve it at the end of the plenary session on Monday. At that moment, the leaders of France, Germany and the United States were not in the room.

The French president expressed dissatisfaction with Lula's decision, noting that the text of the communique did not correspond to France's position.

“President Lula completed the communique. It did not correspond to the position that we could have taken,” Macron said.

A European diplomat called Brazil's actions “brutal,” but his country agreed to respect the summit hosts' decision on the timing of the statement.

Three Brazilian diplomats said the country had accelerated the process of approving the communique to avoid the risk of ending the summit without adopting a final declaration.

They said, that the countries agreed on a communique on Sunday morning, but after Russia's massive attack that same day, France and Germany began pressuring Brazil to change the text, in particular regarding tougher language about Russia's role in the war. However, Brazil refused.

“Renegotiating the text again would jeopardize all the efforts made during the week-long negotiations,” the Brazilian official added.

Recall that the French president had previously noted the need to adhere to commitments to Ukraine.
