The Brazilian Senate Commission recommended the Attorney General's Office to bring charges against President Jair Bolsonaro of massacres in connection with the death of people during the pandemic.
The members of the commission believe that it was the president's actions that led to the death of more than 600 thousand people in Brazil during the pandemic and demand that a criminal case be brought against the president for crimes against humanity.
“The government’s reckless approach to the pandemic has put Brazilians at particular risk of mass infection,” CNN quotes an excerpt from a document drawn up by a commission following a six-month investigation into the actions of the Brazilian president and government.
In addition, Bolsonaro is accused of “intent to immunize the population by natural infection”, and is also considered responsible for the deaths of many representatives of the indigenous peoples of the Amazon, who are often hundreds of kilometers away from the nearest medical facilities.
The draft document, numbering more than 1200 pages, is planned to be discussed in the Senate, and if approved, it will be sent to Attorney General Augusto Aras. In addition to Bolsonaro, the sons of the president, as well as about 70 members of the government and officials, are mentioned in the report as responsible for the deaths of Brazilians from the coronavirus.
However, many believe that the Attorney General is unlikely to initiate such a case against the President of the country, since he is considered his ally.
Bolsonaro himself has already reacted to the commission's statements:
“They want to accuse me of genocide. Now tell me, in which country did no people die? This information is not trustworthy.
