Bottas fastest on Friday, defect stops Verstappen

Mercedes set the pace in Friday's training sessions for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. A defect stopped Max Verstappen.

After the morning training, Bottas was also the fastest in the afternoon, setting the fastest time on Friday in 1: 15.551. Surprisingly on the medium tire. The actually faster soft tire was on par with the yellow medium at temperatures of just 13 degrees.

World champion Lewis Hamilton followed his Mercedes team-mate in second place, just a hundredth of a second behind the Finn. Pierre Gasly showed in the Alpha Tauri in third place (+0.078). Ferrari established itself in the top field. Carlos Sainz was fourth (+0.283), Charles Leclerc fifth (+0.820).

Max Verstappen was torn from the second free practice early. The drive shaft on the Red Bull broke early. The Dutchman did not get as far as the quaifying simulation, finishing 1448 seconds behind in 14th place.

With a crash in Rivazza, Ferrari driver Leclerc brought the training session to an early end, four minutes before the time ran out. After the red flag, the unit was no longer accepted. Leclerc crashed into the gang, breaking his right front suspension.
