The North Atlantic Alliance proposal to host a NATO-Russia Council (NRC) meeting on security assurances is an important step. European Union (EU) High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy Josep Borrell supported the alliance's proposal, TASS reports.
According to the head of European diplomacy, NATO's invitation to dialogue in response to the Russian proposals made public last week is a serious action to ensure peace in Europe. “The Council will work with both the US and NATO to ensure that its interests are represented in any possible discussion with Russia on European security issues,” Borrell concluded.
Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the first round of talks between Russia and the United States on security guarantees will start at the very beginning of 2022. The minister noted that there is an agreement between Washington and Moscow to use three tracks of negotiations. He named the business reaction of his American colleagues.
On December 21, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken announced that the authorities plan to organize bilateral talks with Russia on security issues within the framework of NATO and the OSCE. According to him, the countries agreed to conduct diplomatic work through various channels.
