The search for an 18-year-old Ukrainian student who went missing in Italy last week has ended with the tragic discovery of her body.
In Italy, 18-year-old Ukrainian student Maria Bugayeva, who went missing last week in the south of the country, has been found without signs of life. The girl's body, hanged from a tree, was found about a kilometer from the tourist village of Carovigno (province of Brindisi), where she was doing an internship as part of a European university project.
This was reported by the Italian publication La Stampa.
The main version of the investigation is suicide, but a forensic examination will be carried out.
Circumstances of disappearance and discovery of body
Maria Bugayeva, a student from Ukraine who studied at the University of Bratislava, arrived in the Italian Apulia for an internship at the tourist village of Meditur. She was last seen on Friday, July 4, after which she disappeared.
The police learned of the girl's disappearance on Saturday morning after she failed to return for the night to the hotel where she was doing her internship. Canine units were brought in to help with the search, and they found the girl's body in a forested area, in the old Torre Guaceto parking lot.
The body was found hanging from a tree with a bed sheet, leading investigators to suspect suicide. According to law enforcement, before disappearing, the girl made a money transfer to her brother and left her mobile phone in the room.
Causes and further investigation
Maria's internship was due to end on Sunday, July 6, and it was reported that she had been confirmed shortly before she went missing that she would not be able to continue the project. She was described as calm and interested in her work.
The investigation is ongoing to check whether this was a voluntary act, whether there was incitement or other circumstances.
Let us recall that a terrible accident occurred in Italy, in which a 21-year-old refugee from Ukraine died. At a speed of more than 250 km/h, the car crashed into a tree, none of the passengers survived.
