US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and European Union (EU) High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy Josep Borrell have concluded that security proposals in Europe cannot be discussed without the participation of the European Union. This was reported on the website of the European Foreign Service.
The telephone conversation between the two politicians took place against the backdrop of the buildup of Russia's military power near the borders of Ukraine. It is noted that the Secretary of State and the head of European diplomacy took into account the proposals presented by Russia last week, reflecting the views of the Russian Federation on possible agreements on security in Europe. At the same time, they agreed that EU participation should be a condition for discussing the topic of European security.
In addition, Blinken and Borrell once again expressed support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine and threatened Russia with sanctions in the event of an attack.
Borrell earlier supported NATO's proposal to host a meeting of the NATO-Russia Council.
