Bird of the Year: the pelican became the main bird in Kazakhstan

In Kazakhstan, the pelican was chosen as the bird of the year. In the country, they mainly live in the north, separate flocks nest in the southern regions. But bird watchers are concerned about the state of the populations. MIR 24 correspondent Maxim Kozlov found out why.

The Ili delta is an ideal habitat for pelicans. Reed shores, distance from people and a lot of fish. But a simple drop in water level can ruin everything. Experts say that due to environmental problems, pelicans are threatened with extinction.

“The pelican and waterbirds in general are one of the ways to attract attention not only to the preservation of themselves, but also of their habitats. Because no species can be preserved without preserving the places where it lives. We can fight poaching, anxiety and so on as much as we want. But if our lake dries up or the forest is cut down – the habitat of some species – it simply will not be, ”said Sergey Sklyarenko, director of the Center for Applied Biology of the Association for the Conservation of Biodiversity of Kazakhstan.

There is another reason to save pelicans. When the flock goes south to winter, some chicks lag behind. Such losses are nursed in the Almaty Zoo – there are eight of them.

“Here is the pink pelican. This year we brought it from the Dzhambyl region. Here it is even different in color, you see. She is small, could not fly away with her parents. I stayed on a pond in this village in the Dzhambul region, ”said Elena Potapenko, a zootechnician of the exotic birds department.

Pelicans survive the winter in a special room with humidity control and a swimming pool. Birds in it both have fun and have dinner – fish, for example, eat only from the water.

“This is this fish, this is what we eat. If the fish is cut, they will not eat, if there is no head, they will not eat, if there is no head, we will not eat. They are picky here. But for now we are getting out of the situation with a vobla, ”says Elena Potapenko, a zootechnician of the department of exotic birds.

Curly and pink pelicans live in Kazakhstan – only about five thousand individuals. Both species are listed in the Red Book.

The National Bank of the Republic of Kazakhstan has a series of commemorative coins “Red Book”. A 50 tenge coin is dedicated to the Pelican.
