Biden withdraws from the presidential race and asks to support Kamala Harris in his place.
President of the United States Joe Biden on the evening of July 21 officially announced his withdrawal from the election race. In his statement, the US President thanked Vice President Kamala Harris for his work, calling him an extraordinary partner.
Subsequently, Biden published a new post on the social network X (Twitter), in which he called for support for the current Vice President Kamala Harris in the elections.
“My colleagues -Democrats, I have decided not to announce my candidacy and focus all my energy on my duties as President for the remainder of my term. My first decision as the party's candidate in 2020 was to choose Kamala Harris as my Vice President. “I accepted. Today I want to offer my full support and approval for Kamala to become our party's nominee this year – it's time to unite and defeat Trump. Let's do it,” Biden wrote.
This is the first candidate's withdrawal from the election campaign since the Vietnam War: in 1968, incumbent Democratic President Lyndon Johnson amid anti-war protests, he withdrew his candidacy, and his vice president lost the election to Republican Richard Nixon.
Previously, the media suggested that Biden might withdraw his candidacy from the election due to health conditions and pressure from sponsors who questioned his competency due to his age. If he had won the election, he would have been 86 years old at the end of his next term.
The pressure on Biden increased from party members after his failure at the debate with Trump, as well as a series of subsequent embarrassments. In particular, when introducing Ukrainian President Zelensky to the public, Biden called him “Putin” and subsequently called Kamala Harris “Vice President Trump.”
