The administration of US President Joe Biden will fight the Russian authorities using new methods. This is reported by The New York Times with reference to sources close to the head of the country.
The Democrat's entourage believes that his predecessor, Republican Donald Trump, used the main instrument of foreign policy pressure – sanctions – very inconsistently, thereby undermining the position of the American state. Their overuse has led to sanctions fatigue and ineffectiveness.
As a result, the publication emphasizes, the sanctions regime could not change either the course of the Russian state or the behavior of other countries against which such measures were used. Sanctions are convenient as the simplest measure, but often harm the interests of the United States itself.
The new administration is going to act more consistently, calculate steps and coordinate actions with allies. At the same time, it is noted that new approaches to international relations will be used – Biden hopes to both get his way from the Russian Federation and make China pay for its attitude towards the Uyghur national minority.
Earlier, a group of American senators submitted to the US Congress a bill on sanctions against Russia due to the situation with Alexei Navalny (founder of the Anti-Corruption Fund – FBK, included by the Ministry of Justice in the register of organizations performing the functions of a foreign agent) . The bill provides for the introduction of targeted sanctions “against Russian officials involved in flagrant violations of international law.”
