US President Joe Biden said that social networks like Facebook are “killing people” by allowing misinformation about coronavirus vaccines to emerge and not removing it. According to the US Department of Health, in mid-July, the number of new cases of COVID-19 infection in the United States jumped by 70%. Outbreaks of the disease are recorded in those parts of the country where the number of vaccinations is least. But Facebook does not consider itself to be guilty: the company objected that the social network, on the contrary, saves millions of people.
One of the journalists asked the American leader at the White House what he would like to say to platforms like Facebook about the misinformation they publish about the coronavirus.
“They kill people. Look, the only place where we have a pandemic is among those who have not been vaccinated. They (social media) are killing people, ”Biden replied.
Facebook was quick to object, saying that the social network promotes the dissemination of reliable information about vaccines, and not disinformation. As noted in the company, more than 2 billion people got acquainted with reliable information about COVID-19 and vaccines on Facebook.
“The fact is, Facebook is helping to save lives. We will not be distracted by accusations that are not supported by facts, ”said the representative of the IT giant.
At the end of May, Facebook decided not to remove posts from its platform that the coronavirus was artificially created. Since February, the social network has censored posts about COVID-19 and vaccines, referring to consultations with leading experts, including from the World Health Organization (WHO). In the winter, Facebook blocked advertisements about the benefits of the COVID-19 vaccination because of filters that were supposed to temporarily ban political ads.
