Munich / Vienna. After the Nations League victory with France, Lucas Hernández and Bayern Munich await the summit of the German Bundesliga at Leverkusen on Sunday (3:30 p.m., live, Sky). Sporting highlights for the central defender, which are overshadowed, however: On Tuesday, the Frenchman has to appear before a criminal court in Madrid and a maximum of ten days later to begin his six-month prison sentence in a prison of his choice. Appoint his lawyers.
Such a delicate matter could distract an employee, but not Hernández. “If I hadn't read it in the newspaper, I would never have asked him if something was going on,” said Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann. “He trained well and is in the planning for both games.” The Champions League guest appearance at Benfica Lisbon is already waiting for him on Wednesday. Bayern President Herbert Hainer had previously spoken of “private matters” and assured the player that the club would support him.
The background to this is a tangible dispute between Hernández and his girlfriend at the time and now wife in February 2017. Both were sentenced to community service and a six-month ban on contact because of domestic violence. However, the couple found each other again and went away. However, in Spain there is still a ban on contact even in the event of a reconciliation, in order to avoid coercion, and on his return Hernández's violation was put on record. Since he has already been convicted of domestic violence twice, the sentence is not suspended, as is customary for under two years of age.
From Hoeneß to Bruno
Bayern Munich has a little experience with prison sentences from ex-president Uli Hoeneß (served 21 months for tax evasion) and Breno. The Brazilian set fire to his house in 2011 under the influence of alcohol and medication and was sentenced to three years and nine months in prison for arson. His contract expired in the meantime, but after his release after 13 months, Breno was allowed to work on Säbener Strasse as part of a rehabilitation measure. He then returned to Brazil, but his career never got off the ground.
Manchester City's Benjamin Mendy has been in custody since the end of August. The French are accused of rape and sexual assault in four cases, and one of the victims is said to be a minor. Just a few days ago, a court denied her application for bail. Another hearing is planned for November and the hearing is scheduled for January 24th. City has suspended the 27-year-old.
The most chilling case took place in Brazil. Goalkeeper Bruno confessed to having commissioned the murder of his girlfriend in 2010 (but not to have been involved), parts of the body were fed to dogs. He was sentenced to 22 years in prison, but was released after less than seven – and immediately found a club again. In 2017, Brazil's highest court revised the dismissal. Bruno has been outdoors for two years and plays for fourth division Atlético Carioca.
