At the same time, Demmer recalled that for Germany, as well as for other NATO countries, Ukraine is a respected and long-term partner. “Last year, Ukraine was granted the status of an enhanced partner, which signifies a particularly close partnership,” she said. Germany supports – like its EU and NATO partners – the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, Demmer recalled, noting the concerns of both the federal government and the EU and NATO over the increased presence of Russian troops along the Ukrainian borders, as well as “the growing number of ceasefire violations following the how the situation in eastern Ukraine stabilized in the summer of 2020 “.
Berlin is unhappy with the progress in the implementation of the Minsk agreements
Answering DW's question whether the Minsk Agreements are working, German Foreign Ministry spokesman Christofer Burger admitted that the very situation on the border between Russia and Ukraine does not give Berlin a reason to be satisfied with “progress in the implementation of the Minsk Agreements.” At the same time, he recalled that both sides of the conflict accepted the Minsk agreements as a tool “to achieve a peaceful solution to the situation in eastern Ukraine,” and this is how the German government assesses them. “We regularly called on Russia to negotiate at the level of foreign ministers in the Normandy format. At the same time, he did not comment on Kiev's proposal to postpone the meetings of the Trilateral Contact Group (TCG) on the settlement in Donbass from Minsk to another city.
