Aside from sports, he has not always presented himself from his best side. In 2015 Benzema fell into disrepute when he landed in the headlines with the so-called sextape affair. This scandal is now threatening to catch up with him.
The then French national team colleague Mathieu Valbuena was blackmailed with a sextape. Benzema is accused of complicity. The 33-year-old is said to have put pressure on his teammate to pay the blackmailer. Benzema was kicked out of the national team and only returned this year before the EURO.
Now he has to answer in court. The colleague of ÖFB star David Alaba is invited to Versailles on Wednesday. According to media reports, there is a risk of up to five years imprisonment and a fine of 75,000 euros. The latter would be manageable for the multi-million dollar professional. But imprisonment would mean the end of his career.
By the way, his French team-mate Lucas Hernandez faced a court in Madrid on Monday. He has been behind bars for six months because he violated a ban on contact with his current wife. The Bayern defender is still hoping for a successful appeal. Otherwise he will have to start his detention on October 28th.
