Bengal on the field - again fan riot in Ligue 1

St. Etienne

In the French Ligue 1 there have been chaotic scenes again. The game between St. Etienne and Angers started late on Friday.

When the two teams marched onto the lawn of the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard in St. Etienne, it suddenly rained smoke bombs and pyrotechnics from the stands.

Pictures and videos showed how hooligans stormed the square, cut goal nets and enveloped the arena in thick smoke. The police had marched in front of the fan sectors and took the Ultras back into the ranks after a while.

The teams then quickly fled back to the cabins. Referee Antony Gautier postponed the game by around an hour.

The reason for the action is apparently a protest by St. Etienne fans against their own coach. The supporters of the French record champions demand the immediate expulsion of Claude Puel. St. Etienne is in last place in the table with just four points from ten games.
