Dutch scientists have taught bees to detect coronavirus in minks. Insects do this faster than conventional tests – in a matter of seconds.
Scientists brought bees to sick burrows and then gave them sweetened water as a reward. After contact with healthy animals, insects received no reward. As a result, scientists saw that bees stretch out their proboscis, waiting for sweetened water, every time they smell a virus. The researchers explained that when infected with the coronavirus, the smell of bodily fluids does change.
Of course, bees cannot replace laboratory tests. However, their skills can be useful where there are no laboratories.
Now scientists are creating a machine that can train several bees at the same time. The goal is to teach insects to detect infection by air
