Bear paralyzes airport in Japan

by alex

A bear has made its way onto the runway at Japan's Yamagata Airport.

In Japan, a bear blocked a major regional airport for several hours when it began running along the runway. As a result, 10 flights had to be cancelled and four more delayed.

The Guardian wrote about this curious incident.

The bear first ran onto the runway at around 7am on June 26, delaying several flights. At midday the animal reappeared, and airport staff chased it away in a car. A few hours later the bear reappeared.

“Given the situation, we are currently unable to accept incoming flights. The second closure of the airport has cancelled 10 flights, so we are at a standstill,” said airport spokesman Akira Nagai.

Hunters set traps to catch the bear, and police officers positioned themselves near the airport to prevent it from escaping.

Let's recall that in Japan, the alarm is being raised over bear attacks on people , which few retired hunters can resist. After more than a hundred attacks, six of which ended in death, the growing bear population has become a real problem.

Scientists say climate change is affecting bears' food sources and hibernation times, which is why the animals have begun to enter cities more often.
