Spanish basketball great Pau Gasol announced the end of his 23-year career on Tuesday. “It's a decision I made carefully,” said the 41-year-old at a press conference in Barcelona. He started his professional career there in 1998 before joining the Memphis Grizzlies in the NBA in 2001. Gasol won the NBA title with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2009 and 2010 and made it onto the All-Star team six times.
The Iberian also played for the Chicago Bulls and the San Antonio Spurs, plus a short visit to the Milwaukee Bucks and the Portland Trail Blazers, where Gasol was not used due to an injury. Ultimately, he returned to Barcelona this year and then helped the team to win their first title in seven years. At the Olympic level, Gasol won silver with Spain in 2008 and 2012, and bronze in 2016. At this year's games in Tokyo, the quarter-finals against the USA were the final destination.
