Assad's criminal regime has had grave consequences not only for the Syrians, but also for Syria's neighbors.
The Organization of Investigative Journalism (OCCRP) has recognized the ousted Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad as the biggest corrupt official of 2024 years.
This is stated in a publication on the OCCRP website.
A jury of investigative journalists named Assad “Person of the Year” in the “Organized Crime and Corruption” category. The organization notes that this title is given to the person who has done “the most to sow chaos around the world through organized crime and corruption.”
The OCCRP judges noted that Assad's activities had dire consequences not only for Syrians, but also for Syria's neighbors. Assad oversaw the production and distribution of the street drug Captagon, known for causing a highly addictive drug habit. Assad used drug money to build a machine of repression in the country to support his regime.
In addition to the production and sale of captogon, other forms of organized crime flourished in Syre under Bashar al-Assad's presidency: human smuggling and the illegal circulation of antiques and weapons.
In the past, OCCRP has awarded the “honorary” title of “corruption of the year” to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, the Romanian parliament, Kremlin dictator Putin, Wagner PPK founder Yevgeny Prigozhin, self-proclaimed Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, and Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro.
Recall that the fall of Assad's regime under rebel pressure was swift. WP wrote that the dictator had rejected the US offer of an agreement the day before.
