The Bangladesh authorities will change the law and will execute the rapists. The country's leadership went for it after several days of mass demonstrations over sexual violence. This was announced on Monday, October 12, by BBC News.
The protests began last week after a video of a group abuse of a woman was widely circulated on social media. Activists claim that over the past year about 5.4 thousand cases of rape have been registered in the country, but very often the criminals avoid punishment: the victims are afraid to file a report with the police out of shame.
The criminals in the video in question have been caught. Not long before that, Bangladesh was rocked by another high-profile rape, involving members of the student wing of the country's ruling party.
Thousands of people protested with the slogans “No mercy for the rapists” and “Pick up the rapists.” Participants of the performances built a model of the gallows on one of the squares.
The authorities have listened to the opinion of the people: the government is amending laws on the consideration of cases of sexual violence, already on Tuesday the president of the country is going to sign them.
India, neighboring Bangladesh, also suffers from the problem of sexual violence. In March, it was reported that four Indians involved in a bus rape were executed seven years after the crime.
