Former and current Blue Origin employees accused company founder Jeff Bezos of ignoring warnings about the insecurity of certain rockets in order not to lose to competitors in the space race. In addition, outraged workers said the businessman had created a “toxic and sexist atmosphere” at the firm. For example, one of the managers used the words “baby” and “doll” to refer to female subordinates.
Former head of internal communications at Blue Origin Alexandra Abrams and 20 other former and current employees of the company complained about Bezos in a letter. According to them, the billionaire ignored warnings about the insecurity of some rockets in order to avoid delays in new launches and not to yield in the space race to the head of SpaceX Elon Musk and the founder of Virgin Galactic Richard Branson.
“The authors of the letter stated that they would not feel safe flying Blue Origin, as the company does not follow the proper security measures to compete with Musk and Branson,” Business Insider told Business Insider.
In another part of the letter, Blue Origin employees accused Bezos of allegedly condoning sexual harassment at the company. According to the authors, one of the leaders, “close to Bezos and CEO Bob Smith,” was caught in harassment more than once. But despite this, he was promoted. The manager was removed from work only after he once again tried to “touch a colleague,” the authors of the letter say.
Also, the drafters of the complaint told about another manager, who allegedly often called the employees with the words “baby”, “doll” and others like that.
“Many of us have dreamed throughout our careers of launching a crewed rocket into space and seeing it land safely on Earth. But when Jeff Bezos took off on space travel this July, we didn't share his delight. Instead, many of us watched with an overwhelming sense of unease. Some of us couldn't look at it at all, ”the letter says.
Commenting on the complaint, a Blue Origin spokesman told CBS that the company will not “tolerate internal harassment” and has already launched an internal investigation.
Earlier, The Secret said that Jeff Bezos decided to devote twice as much time to the space company Blue Origin as before. After the billionaire was in space, he began to work on the affairs of the company not only on Wednesdays, but also on Tuesdays. Earlier, the businessman called Blue Origin the most important thing in his life.
