A resident of the Australian city of Perth will face trial for creating a fake video in which a man in the uniform of the Australian Federal Police Commissioner urged citizens of the country to overthrow the government. This was reported by the local police, reports The Guardian.
The suspect, who pretended to be a police officer on the tape, said he was approached by the military and civil servants with the intention of opposing the current government and removing state leaders. According to law enforcement agencies, the video spread among supporters of anti-government actions.
The Australian faces up to two years in prison. He was also accused of making fake police badges and IDs. Federal Police Investigation Officer Andrew Donoghue said the arrest of the 49-year-old defendant was part of a massive counter-terrorism operation against a group of individuals who, disguised as police, called for the overthrow of high-ranking Australian politicians.
The officer noted that investigators have no evidence of the group's plans for violent action against the government. However, he stressed that their behavior is troubling, and the current investigation into these citizens “is focused on crime, not ideology.”
On July 26, it was reported that a shelter for male victims of domestic violence was opened in the Australian state of Queensland. The shelter provides temporary shelter to residents to help them escape abuse and return to normal life. It is noted that this is the first such organization in the country.
