Main points

  • Ukrainian drones have attacked the Energia plant in Yeletsk for the second time, which produces components for Russian guided aerial bombs (KABs).
  • The company produces chemical power sources for universal planning and correction modules, which are critical for Russian weapons.
  • An attack on the plant could complicate the production of aerial bombs for Russia, as the component is needed for energy-intensive control systems.

Ukrainian drones have attacked the little-known Energia plant in Yelets, Lipetsk Oblast, for the second time. In fact, the company produces important components for Russian KABs.

The previous attack on Energia took place 42 days ago, 24 Kanal reports, citing Defence Express.

What does the attacked Energia plant in Yelets produce?

The Energia plant in the Russian city of Yelets, Lipetsk region, has again been attacked by Ukrainian long-range drones.

According to local authorities and video from the scene, a fire broke out on the premises of the enterprise, and workers were evacuated.

This is the second time Ukraine has attacked Energia – the previous strike took place on the night of May 23. This repeated targeting indicates that the facility is of strategic importance for weapons production.

According to the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, the enterprise manufactures chemical power sources for universal planning and correction modules (UMPK), which are used in Russian guided aerial bombs (KABs).

The destruction of this particular plant could significantly complicate the Russians' production of such aerial bombs. At the same time, this component of the UMPK is not quite ordinary, because it provides power for the rather energy-intensive, powerful servo drives of the control system and all the electronics of the module.

It's reminiscent of the dilemma of the bombing of ball bearing factories in World War II. Small factories are often not covered by air defense systems, but can play a key role in weapons production.

During World War II, American intelligence concluded that the most profitable campaign would be to bomb bearing factories. Without this simple component, neither a motorcycle, nor a tank, nor a fighter jet could be assembled. Although de facto, bearing factories were attacked only twice, after which they abandoned this strategy in favor of bombing cities.
