IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi has written to the UN Security Council expressing concern over Israeli attacks on Iran's nuclear facilities.
The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, said an attack on Iran's Bushehr nuclear power plant would result in a “very high release of radioactivity” that would affect people within hundreds of kilometres of the plant, requiring evacuation, iodine supplementation and dietary restrictions.
The International Atomic Energy Agency reported this.
Grossi has addressed the UN Security Council over the Israeli attacks on Iran's nuclear facilities, saying that while the strikes have not yet caused a radioactive release that would affect the population, the risk of such an event exists.
Grossi said the Israeli military had recently erroneously reported an attack on the Bushehr nuclear power plant to the media, which, despite the retraction of the statement, “underscored the vital need for clear and accurate communication.” The IAEA director noted that the Bushehr nuclear power plant is the nuclear facility in Iran where the consequences of an attack could be “the most serious.”
“I want to make this absolutely clear. In the event of an attack on the Bushehr nuclear power plant, a direct hit would result in a very high release of radioactivity into the environment,” Grossi said.
An attack on the plant's power lines would have similar consequences, he added. Grossi warned that people within hundreds of kilometers of the plant would be at risk from radiation, noting that evacuation, iodine treatment and food monitoring might be necessary. The IAEA director also stressed that Bushehr's location in southern Iran means the plant is closer to the capitals of several U.S. allies in the region than to Tehran. He said representatives from those countries had already reached out to him to express their concerns.
