At speed. The operator with the fastest mobile Internet has been identified

On July 8, Ookla published the results of an independent study on the quality of mobile Internet in Russia. Its methodology allows collecting the most objective data for all operators and regions.

The study is based on over 7 million measurements of mobile internet speed in different parts of the country from January to June 2021. Ookla analyzed the speed data received by Russian users of the Speedtest® app. Measurements were carried out on more than 1.4 million unique smartphones.

MegaFon showed the best results in the country, ahead of other operators in all key indicators.

The average download speed in the operator's network was 32.92 Mbps, the download speed was 11.90 Mbps. In Moscow, the average download speed was 48.85 Mbps, in St. Petersburg – 33.19 Mbps, Samara – 25.21 Mbps, Krasnodar – 25.76 Mbps, Yekaterinburg – 32.73 Mbps. s, Novosibirsk – 41.05 Mbit / s, Vladivostok – 43.03 Mbit / s.

Traffic volume has tripled

High speeds of mobile Internet allow subscribers to play online games without delays, start streams, listen to music, communicate in social networks and instant messengers, watch movies and transfer files of any size. For example, you can download a minute video in TikTok in just a matter of seconds.

“MegaFon has maintained the leadership in terms of mobile Internet speed in Russia for five years in a row. During this time, the total volume of mobile traffic in our network has tripled. Content consumption is also changing: if in 2017 65% of traffic came from video services and social networks, now it is redistributed to online games, instant messengers and streaming services. We take all this into account both in the development of the network and in the development of tariffs and options. Our subscribers not only use the mobile Internet themselves at maximum speeds, but can also distribute the Internet from their smartphones to their friends and family for free and without restrictions, ”says the company's commercial director Vlad Wolfson.

In the first half of 2021, the mobile operator developed the network at an accelerated pace; during this time, 75% of the annual plan for the construction of LTE base stations was implemented and the investment program for the construction of a fourth generation network for the second half of the year was expanded. The main focus of development has become territories outside of large settlements.

Megafon also continues to transfer the frequency bands allocated for second and third generation networks to LTE services, combining them to achieve higher speeds. The operator unites the areas of IT and telecommunications, provides services for mobile and fixed communications, mobile and broadband Internet access, digital television and OTT video content, innovative digital products and services. The company's services in Russia are used by 70.4 million customers.
