At least one victim and four dozen victims: what is known about a volcanic eruption in Indonesia

Several sand miners are trapped.

In Indonesia, as a result of the eruption of the Semeru volcano on the island of Java, at least one person died from severe burns, and dozens more were injured.

This was reported on Saturday, December 4, The Associated Press reports.

It is noted that after a sudden eruption caused by heavy rains, 41 people were hospitalized with burn injuries.

According to Indah Masdar, deputy head of the Lumajang district in East Java province, two local residents are reported missing, and several sand miners are trapped in remote areas along the river.

The head of the affected area, Torikul Haq, noted that “thick columns of ash” covered several villages. In addition, after the rains, debris and lava formed thick mud, which destroyed the main bridge connecting Lumajang and neighboring Malang and damaged several houses.

According to the head of the geological exploration center Eko Budi Lelono, at least twice on Saturday “streams of scalding gas and lava covered up to 800 meters distance to the nearest river.” In connection with the incident, residents were urged to stay five kilometers from the mouth of the crater.

Several hundred people are currently in temporary shelters and safer areas. It is indicated that the evacuation was aggravated by a power outage.

Recall that the videos posted on social networks show how local residents flee from a huge cloud of smoke. On the footage, you can hear the screams of people trying to escape.
