Rescuers continue to search for missing people.
At least 157 people have died due to mudslides in a remote area Ethiopia, hit by heavy rains.
Local authorities reported this on Tuesday, AP reports.
Small children and pregnant women were reported to be among the victims of mudslides in the Kencho Shacha region of southern Ethiopia.
“The death toll rose to 157 on Tuesday as search operations continued in the area.”, it said.
< p>Most of the victims were buried in the landslide Monday morning as rescuers searched steep terrain for survivors of another landslide the previous day.
Aele said at least five people were pulled alive from the mud.
An official in Gof Marcos Melese said many remained missing among a group that was covered in mud, trying to save the others.
“We are still looking for the missing”,” said Melese, director of the disaster response agency in the Gofa zone.
“There are children who hug corpses after losing “for the accident, the whole family, including mother, father, brother and sister,” he said.
During the rains in Ethiopia, which began in July and is expected to last until mid-September, landslides are common.
