The sensational move from Cristiano Ronaldo to Manchester City is on the home stretch. However, there is a problem with numbers for the Portuguese.
The bombshell burst on Thursday: The 36-year-old, who is actually still under contract with Juventus Turin until 2022, has agreed on a two-year contract with the “Citizens” and is said to collect 15 million euros net. On Thursday evening, the five-time world footballer asked for the change clearance. The transfer negotiations between Juventus and the English champions are already underway.
The deal could become public on Friday. Turin are reportedly waiting for an offer from “Skyblues”, demanding 28 to 30 million euros for the Portuguese striker.
At the English sheikh club, however, Ronaldo would have to do without his trademark. The number 7, which Ronaldo always wore in recent years, is occupied by Raheem Sterling. The English team player does not want to leave Pep Guardiola's team, contrary to original media reports. In any case, “CR7” would not appear with the 7 in the light blue city dress.
Before Ronaldo wore the 7 at Real Madrid, the five-time world footballer played with the number 9, in the Portuguese national team for a short time with the legendary 10. But all these numbers are assigned by City. Gabriel Jesus wears 9, star newcomer Jack Grealish wears 10. The 17 is occupied by Kevin de Bruyne.
Looking at his own career, there is only one number left. When Ronaldo made his debut for Sporting Lisbon, the Portuguese wore the number 28. This is also available for the Premier League winners. If Ronaldo dials this number, he would do the same as Lionel Messi. The Argentine chose the number 30 with which he made his Barca debut after joining Paris St.-Germain.
Of course, Ronaldo could turn “CR7” into “CR77” with the 77. Clarity could then already prevail on Friday.
