The head of the Department of Astronomy at Harvard Avi Loeb (Avi Loeb) said that the first interstellar asteroid Oumuamua is of artificial origin. He outlined his hypothesis in the book Extraterrestrial: The First Sign of Intelligent Life Beyond Earth, Phys.org reports.
Scientists discovered Oumuamua in October 2017. They decided that the object moving at high speed could not be gravitationally bound to the solar system and came from another star.
The researchers were confused by the strange behavior of the interstellar asteroid. It flew past the Sun, then deviated from the expected trajectory and accelerated under the influence of an unknown force. Astronomers speculated that this was due to the release of gas, like comets, but they did not find confirmation of the emissions.
Avi Loeb stated that it cannot be ruled out that the asteroid Oumamua is an alien ship. A space object can be either long and thin, like a cigar, or flat and round.
However, members of the scientific community did not support the astronomer's ideas. Astrophysicist Ethan Siegel called him a once-respected scientist who began playing to the public.
