The AstraZeneca vaccine will be given in the UK from Monday

In the fight against the corona pandemic, the vaccine developed by the AstraZeneca group and Oxford University will also be used in Great Britain from Monday. According to the government, 530,000 doses of this vaccine are initially available. In total, Great Britain has ordered 100 million cans from AstraZeneca. Meanwhile, Scotland is likely to declare a new lockdown because of the skyrocketing number of infections.

To date, more than a million doses of the vaccine from German company Biontech and its US partner Pfizer have been administered in the UK. Great Britain is one of the countries hardest hit by the corona pandemic in Europe. In the fight against the virus, the government is relying on a quick vaccination campaign.

The Scottish regional government wants to pull the emergency brake. As the daily newspaper “The Times” reports, a national lockdown is to be declared at a government meeting on Monday. Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon has also ordered parliament back from the Christmas break in order to be able to make appropriate decisions. According to the newspaper, the lockdown is “likely to last until spring”.

The central government in London is still waiting, although the number of new infections every day has been at a record level of around 50,000 for days. Opposition leader Keir Starmer called on Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Sunday to declare a new lockdown immediately in order to get the infection under control.
