Asphalt began to wear out faster than 100 years ago

by alex

Japanese scientists have stated that modern asphalt and concrete wears out faster than 100 years ago. The reason for this is the presence in the environment of chemicals from exhaust gases, detergents, anti-snow agents and plastic products.

Scientists have decided to understand why old buildings, built of concrete, are sometimes in better condition than modern ones. They have developed a device that simulates the operating conditions of concrete and asphalt. The researchers took pieces of modern concrete and asphalt, 1960 Japanese asphalt and a 120-year-old reference concrete for the experiment.

As it turned out, modern materials contain third-party impurities, including phthalates and phosphates. They degrade the quality of concrete and asphalt. Scientists suggested that these substances get into building materials even at the production stage. Because of this, the durability of the finished product is reduced.
