Scan of a Stradivarius violin
Neural networks test the harmony of the violin with algebra: in Italian Cremona, famous for violin makers, a group of researchers using artificial intelligence is figuring out whether it is necessary to modernize the design of a classical instrument.
Sebastian Gonzalez, Violin Museum in Cremona:
“Today, even the wood is not the same as 300 years ago, when he created his Stradivari violins, due to global warming and other things. Well, if the material has changed, then the shape of the instrument could be changed. Today violin makers work according to the old patterns, copying old samples – it seems to me that this is not the best approach. “
Just one of the Stradivari violins was chosen for the experiments. The top soundboard is tested with a hammer and an accelerometer: how exactly vibrations propagate along a wooden plate and how they then diverge in space, creating the sound of a violin. Artificial intelligence based on this data can, in theory, offer new solutions.
Artificial intelligence will create the perfect violin

An unprecedented influx of illegal immigrants in Lithuania: earlier, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko threatened to weaken control over drug trafficking and migration in response to international pressure on Minsk.

Sebastian Gonzalez, Violin Museum in Cremona:
“It seems to me that violin makers are a little afraid of what we do. But we don't want to destroy anything. We are not going to create a robot that makes violins. Our goal is to understand.”
Researchers want to find out how and why the ancient masters, with only their own neural networks, came to this design, and what can be changed today – in order, for example, to create a violin whose voice would spread only in the right direction.
