Artificial human organs to be grown on the International Space Station

According to the press service of the University of Zurich, the university, together with Airbus, will deliver materials to the ISS for experiments on growing organelles – copies of human organs. The experiment is important in order to further put the cultivation of organelles in zero gravity on an industrial conveyor.

The dispatch of human stem cells – the basis for organelles – is scheduled for August 28, as part of a resupply mission to the ISS. The experiment will deliberately be carried out in zero gravity, because, according to one of the project leaders, Professor Cora Thiel, it is impossible to grow organelles in Earth conditions without a specialized supporting frame. “In space, where there is no gravity, this problem is solved by itself,” – said Thiel.

Organoids are important for medicine and the pharmaceutical industry to conduct research on real human tissue without experimenting with animals. It is noted that the first results will return from the ISS in October this year.
