Armenian parliament abolishes martial law

Before the early parliamentary elections, the deputies of the National Assembly of Armenia abolished the martial law in the country, “Sputnik Armenia” reports.

According to the laws of the republic, parliamentary elections cannot be held under martial law.

Earlier, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced the holding of early parliamentary elections in the country on June 20. He made this decision during a meeting with the leader of the Prosperous Armenia faction Gagik Tsarukyan.

Recall that martial law was introduced in Armenia on September 27, 2020, when the escalation of the armed conflict with Azerbaijan on the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh began.

On December 2, the National Assembly of Armenia announced the convening of an extraordinary meeting to consider the issue of abolishing martial law, but only 36 deputies voted for the cancellation, and 56 against. Martial law was not canceled, but many restrictions were removed. Including a ban on holding rallies, media publications, a special regime of entry and exit from the country, restrictions on the publication and broadcast of programs.
