The Governor of the American Arkansas Asa Hutchinson signed a decree banning almost all abortions within the state. An exception is not made for cases of rape and incest, reports The Washington Time.
The decree will go into effect in a month and a half, if approved by state legislators. It prescribes abortions to be performed solely with the aim of saving the life of a pregnant woman. Hutchinson, in turn, said that he rather favored an exception to the rule in the aforementioned cases, but signed the decree “because of strong legislative support and his own views.”
This decision, as expected, found opponents: several residents of the state went to a rally in front of the Arkansas Capitol.
Already 14 American states, where the conservative Republican Party is in power, have proposed to completely ban abortion on their territory. South Carolina joined the list in February.
The purpose of such a massive demarche is to change the constitutional norm. In 1973, based on the case of Roe v. Wade, the right to terminate pregnancy was enshrined in the American constitution. States with a large percentage of Christian Conservatives to this day are unhappy with this Supreme Court decision.
