In view of the second wave of the corona pandemic in Argentina, the football association of the South American country canceled the first division final. Up to and including May 30th, no games of the national leagues will be played, as the association announced on Friday. This means that the semi-finals on Saturday between Independiente and Colon and on Sunday between Racing Club and Boca Juniors and the final on May 30th cannot take place as planned.
Together with the provincial governments and the league, a new date for the games should be sought later, it said. On Thursday, the Argentine government once again ordered tough exit restrictions in the fight against the corona pandemic. In the particularly affected areas of the South American country, there is a curfew between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. until the end of the month. Even during the day, Argentines are only allowed to move near their place of residence. Only essential stores can open. Social, religious and sporting activities are prohibited. Schools and kindergartens remain closed.
In autumn in the southern hemisphere, the second corona wave hit Argentina hard. On Thursday, the South American country registered 35,884 new infections per day – one of the highest levels since the pandemic began more than a year ago. In the past few weeks, the number of new infections per day has consistently exceeded 25,000.
So far, around 3.4 million people in Argentina have been shown to be infected with the coronavirus, and over 72,000 patients have died in connection with Covid-19. The utilization of the intensive care units is over 70 percent.
