Are Ukraine and Russia ready for negotiations: Biden's office answered

John Kirby noted that there is no expectation yet that either side is ready for negotiations.

The Biden administration rejected the suggestion that the new sanctions against Russia were introduced as a bargaining chip in negotiations to end the war in Ukraine, since there are currently no expectations that the parties are ready for such negotiations.

This position was voiced on Friday at a briefing for journalists by White House adviser John Kirby, writes “Ukrinform”.

“This (the introduction of sanctions against the Russian Federation – ed.) was not done with the expectation that it would become a bargaining chip that could be taken off the table when Ukraine wants to sit down at the negotiating table. There is no expectation yet that either side is ready for negotiations,” Kirby noted.

The White House adviser once again emphasized that the decision to introduce additional sanctions was based on forecasts for the external and internal markets in the energy sector. At the same time, Kirby confirmed that previously large-scale sanctions in this area were postponed in order to contain the rise in energy prices in the United States.

Recall that on Friday the US Treasury Department announced the introduction of a large-scale package of sanctions against the Russian energy sector. The list of restrictions included hundreds of tankers of the shadow fleet of the Russian Federation, the largest commercial shipping company Sovcomflot, oil producing companies Gazprom Neft and Surgutneftegaz, along with their subsidiaries.
