In Norway, in the Rheinheien Park on Mount Digervarden, archaeologists have discovered skis that are more than 1,300 years old. Writes about this Daily Mail with reference to the Secrets of Ice program.
Researchers managed to find one of the skis and bring it to the laboratory back in 2014. The second was obtained in 2021, when the ice in the area thawed significantly.
This is the oldest pair of skis that archaeologists have ever found.
On September 26, 2021, researchers climbed the mountain using GPS coordinates and photographs taken during their first visit. At that time, the ski was still frozen in ice, and in order to get to it, the specialists had to break the ice with an ax and pour boiling water.
The length of the found ski is 187 centimeters, and its width is 17 centimeters. The first, which was discovered seven years ago, has different dimensions: it is shorter by 17 centimeters and two centimeters narrower.
According to experts, they are not identical, because they were made by hand.
In addition, the ski found in 2014 has more bindings, shows signs of repairs and lacks a heel counter.
And only after careful study, experts will be able to conclude when it broke – either when the owner lost it, or it cracked while it was lying under a layer of ice.
