Apple Wireless Beacons Help Steal Cars

by alex

Canadian hijackers have begun using Apple's wireless beacons to steal cars. It is reported by the Cult of Mac edition.

Journalists refer to the report of the police department of the Canadian city of Aurora. It says that AirTag wireless trackers are being used to steal cars. Police representatives said that the hijackers attach the device to the car, track its movement to the garage, and then steal it.

Typically, attackers use AirTag to steal expensive cars that they pay attention to on city streets. Criminals install Apple beacons under the fuel filler flap, under the bottom of a car, or on a towbar. Then they turn on the iPhone and use the tracking function to find out the location of the victim. After that, the criminals come to the place and steal the car.

The police said that while this type of theft is rare, but is rapidly gaining popularity. According to the department, over the past two months, law enforcement officers have become aware of five cases of theft using wireless trackers.

The journalists noted that AirTag has anti-surveillance protection. If the owner of the beacon throws it to the victim, then when moving, the gadget will make a sound, attracting attention to itself. If the user has an iPhone, the device will send a notification that his movements can be seen by someone else.

Apple introduced the AirTag tracking tag in April. The gadget can be put in a bag or hung on the keys to find them in case of loss. The cost of the accessory in Russia is 2990 rubles.
