Apple has removed one of the most popular Quran reading apps in China, Quran Majeed. The utility is available worldwide in the App Store and has nearly 150,000 reviews. According to the BBC, the company closed access to the app following a request from Chinese officials to “post illegal religious texts.” Beijing did not comment on the situation to journalists.
Apple explained that it is obliged to comply with local laws, even if it does not agree with the position of local governments. The app makers themselves said they have about 1 million users in China.
“We are trying to contact the Chinese Cyberspace Administration and the relevant Chinese authorities to resolve this issue,” the developers of Quran Majeed said.
The Chinese Communist Party officially recognizes Islam as a religion. However, the republic has already been accused of a harsh discriminatory policy towards the Muslim population in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (XUAR).
