The Fakespot application has disappeared from the App Store, which analyzes reviews for products on the Internet, checks them for authenticity and identifies fakes among them. Apple removed the service from its store a month after it was added. The company explained that they removed the application following a complaint from the Amazon online store. The latter stated that the latest version of Fakespot could theoretically steal customer data from the marketplace.
According to Fakespot creator Saud Khalifa, Apple got rid of the app without any explanation. “Imagine that the landlord comes to you and says that you need to pick up all your things and get out right now. To be honest, this is how I feel right now, ”he said.
Apple said in a statement that it was approached by Amazon and complained about the service. According to the online store, the app “provides customers with misleading information about sellers and their products,” and “damages the sellers' business and creates potential security risks.” The online platform also said that Fakespot is implementing code to collect and track customer information.
According to Khalifa, his app does collect “some user data,” but it doesn't sell it to third parties. He noted that many other services and websites, including Amazon itself, also collect and track user information.
“We don't steal user data, we never did.” Amazon did not provide any evidence, and Apple acted without any evidence on hand, ”the founder of Fakespot said.
In January, the American non-profit organization (NPO) Coalition for a Safer Web filed a lawsuit against Apple. The corporation was demanded to remove the Telegram application from the App Store under the pretext of having “inappropriate content” in the messenger.
