Apple invented glass headphones

Apple plans to use glass in its new AirPods. This is reported by the Appleinsider edition.

The journalists drew attention to the document that appeared in the database of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). According to the description, Apple is proposing to patent a project for full-size headphones with glass cups. The explanatory note to the invention says that the headphones as a device have existed for more than a hundred years and their structure remains unchanged. “There is a need to improve the design and performance of the headphones,” said a company spokesman.

The company's engineers suggest using glass cups in headphones and specify that glass is less prone to scratches than plastic or metal. “Also glass is more attractive from an aesthetic point of view than polycarbonate,” – says the description of the application. The patent of the American company was registered in the USPTO database on February 16.

Journalists who studied the patent application noted that the document did not mention the fact that glass can improve the acoustic properties of the headset. “Glass can block certain sounds and let some frequencies pass,” the authors said.

Apple won't be the first gadget maker on the market to use glass for audio. In particular, Sennheiser's HD 820 headphones use glass to deliver a realistic sound.

Earlier, enthusiasts showed the insides of Apple AirPods Max headphones worth 63 thousand rubles. The headset has a metal headband and ear cups and acoustic foam ear cushions. The full-size earbuds were unveiled in December 2020.
