A group of 15 former and current Apple employees organized the #AppleToo movement – similar to #MeToo. They launched a website where employees of an iPhone and iPad manufacturer can report incidents of discrimination and sexual harassment within the company. Participants in the movement expect their efforts to bring about real change at Apple.
The #AppleToo website started working on the morning of August 23, The Verge noted. In addition, the movement has a Twitter account. The organizers sent messages about the launch of the resource to 200 Apple employees and contractors.
“It's time to think differently. A group of Apple employees have banded together to organize and protect themselves. We ask colleagues who want to see real changes in the company to share their stories. When brought together and presented together, our stories help uncover persistent patterns of racism, sexism, inequality, discrimination, intimidation, oppression, coercion, abuse, unfair punishment and unchecked privilege, ”the #AppleToo website said in a statement.
The activists have already been supported by some of their well-known associates. Among them is Timnit Gebra, who was fired from Google at the end of 2020. The black employee has repeatedly spoken publicly about the problems of the corporation, including pointing out the insufficient number of minority representatives among her employees. Before Google, Gebru worked at Apple, but before she did not talk about the time spent at the Cupertino-based company.
“When I worked at Apple, there was so much blatant stuff going on. And I've always wondered how the firm manages not to get hit. I'm glad Apple employees have organized. It's time to bring the company to justice, ”Gebru said.
MeToo
The #MeToo (Me Too) movement emerged in 2017 after The New York Times published an investigation into Harvey Weinstein. Many famous Hollywood actresses have accused the film producer of harassment. Later, actress Alice Milano invited all victims of violence and sexual harassment to tell their stories on social networks and mark them with the hashtag #MeToo. Time magazine even awarded the movement the title of “Person of the Year”. The Secret talked about how the fight against harassment changed business here.
