The increase in prices for microprocessors by the Taiwanese manufacturer TSMC may lead to an increase in the price of Apple technology. The American company is one of the main customers of TSMC. Taiwanese chips are used in iPhones and iPads. Also, expensive electronics can increase the value of cars, Fox Business said. In its most recent quarterly report, Apple warned that chip shortages would affect smartphone production.
A record increase in prices for chips by their largest manufacturer became known on August 26. TSMC announced that its products will rise in price by up to 20% in December.
The increase will affect microcontrollers, graphics chips, systems-on-a-chip and other components. The most advanced 7nm chips will rise in price by about 10%. Less advanced, 16-nanometer processors, which are used in the automotive industry, will rise in price by 20%. Since the fall of 2020, TSMC has already increased prices by 10%.
Fox noted that the announced price hike comes amid a global semiconductor shortage that has affected both Apple and major automakers including Toyota and General Motors.
Toyota previously announced it would cut production by 40% in September. General Motors announced in August that it would suspend production of pickups at three plants in North America due to a shortage of electronic components.
