Users of electronic devices from Apple may experience Internet disruptions. This is due to the expiration of the Let's Encrypt digital certificate. This is reported by “Gazeta.ru” with reference to Alexander Khakimov, technical director of the hosting provider and domain registrar REG.RU.
According to the expert, all user devices that “do not know” about these root certificates will no longer trust all certificates from Let's Encrypt after September 30th.
Khakimov also said that the problems primarily threaten iPhone and iPad users who will not be able to update the system to iOS 10. This applies to older models of gadgets – iPhone 4S and earlier. MacBook laptops with macOS 10.12.0 and later may also have problems. Moreover, if the owners of the iPhone 5 update the operating system to iOS 10, then their devices will work without interruptions.
Also, difficulties may arise for owners of Playstation 3 and Playstation 4 game consoles with a firmware version older than 5.00. Nintendo 3DS, older smart gadgets and smart TVs, are also at risk of disconnection from the internet.
British programmer Scott Helme said that the Let's Encrypt certificate will expire between 14:12 and 16:01 Moscow time.
