Anthem mishap in Moldova
A hymn mishap before the World Cup qualifier between Moldova and Austria. The sound system in the stadium in Chisinau went on strike.
Before the kick-off of the fourth World Cup qualifying match day, both teams were already on the pitch, waiting for the anthems that the stadium announcer had already announced to be played.
But instead of the first bars of “Land der Berge” there was nothing. For seconds there was silence in the arena.
Until it was picked up by a handful of red-white-red battle-goers who had traveled with them and began to sing loudly. The ÖFB team then joined in. The players took each other by the shoulders, sang along with the football fans.
The strange contribution, however, had been in vain. Because after the fans had intoned the Austrian anthem, the sound system suddenly worked again. In the second attempt, the music came off the tape. And the fans and players sang along for a second time …
