Arsenal fans protest against club owner Kroenke

Arsenal suffered another setback in the English Premier League with an unfortunate 1-0 defeat against Everton. While the Ancelotti Club Everton are eighth after six games without a win, the Europa League semi-finalist from London is only ninth after the defeat with 46 points. Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno provided the game-winning scene with an own goal.

The German national team keeper steered the ball into his own goal after a low cross from the Brazilian Richarlison in the 76th minute. Coach Mikel Arteta was pissed off and described his team's home performance as “terrible and unacceptable”, but defended Leno. “We all make mistakes, it's part of football,” said Arteta.

The coach was particularly angry with the referee, who withdrew a penalty whistle after the VAR decision, because Nicolas Pepe had been offside 15 seconds before the foul on Danny Ceballos. “Unbelievable, there were eight or nine ball touches in between,” said Arteta.

Before the game, there had been massive fan protests in front of the Emirates Stadium in London. Numerous Arsenal supporters called for the withdrawal of club owner Stan Kroenke because of his support for the Super League. “Kroenke out” and “We want our arsenal back,” shouted the fans among other things.

Twelve European top clubs, including Arsenal FC, announced the establishment of a billion-dollar Super League in competition with the UEFA Champions League on Monday night, but then abandoned these plans.

The founder and head of the music streaming market leader Spotify, Daniel Ek, has meanwhile signaled his interest in buying the London club should Kroenke want to sell his shares. Even as a child he was an Arsenal fan, wrote Ek on Twitter and announced that he would “throw his hat in the ring” if Kroenke wanted to sell.
